Chantilly Little League
Umpire Training
Spring 2010
Thanks for visiting this page and your interest in volunteering as an Umpire in Chantilly Little League. Your participation in the largest organized youth program in the world with more than 3 million players who are under the guidance of more than one million volunteers is vital to the success of Little League. Umpiring can be a most rewarding experience.
As we get closer to the start of the season, check for more information about dates and times for training. In the meantime, if you will be umpiring for the very first time this spring, the following will give you an idea of what to expect this season.
Chantilly Volunteer Umpire Association or CVUA, primarily assigns veteran volunteer adult umpires for games at the Majors level and is supplemented by Youth Umpires. Volunteer parents and Youth Umpires are generally assigned to the younger age groups.
Youth Umpires are the only paid umpires, receiving $20 per game for the field and, for those that are qualified and want to umpire behind the plate, $30.
Classroom training is conducted focusing primarily on rules of the game with other topics such as safety. During field training we instruct plate mechanics, proper positioning in the field, proper use of eyes, and illustration of certain rules that were discussed in the classroom. All training is provided without any fees or costs passed along to you.
You are supplied with a rule book, field and plate hat, umpire shirt and umpire patch. Chest protectors, shin guards, and masks are kept in the equipment boxes at all fields.
After initial training, you will always be able to call on those that helped with your training for any questions or help. Almost without exception, our veteran umpires began their umpiring career as a parent volunteer. For those that enjoy umpiring in Little League, advancement to higher levels of tournament play is possible all the way to the Little League World Series.
Again, check back to www.cvua.org soon for more information concerning the dates and times for training. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate sending an email.
